GTS Case Studies: Selected Data and Information Management Projects

Data Management consultancy for ChevronTexaco Mid-continent Business Unit, Houston

GTS consultants assisted the ChevronTexaco mid-continent business unit to define a comprehensive programme for the ongoing management of upstream data within the business unit. A comprehensive project plan was developed, using CPDEP project management methodology, to align MCBU data preparatory activities with upstream project plans for the migration to master data stores. This included drilling information, field data capture, gas control, production allocation, well and production history, well logs, seismic, and physical assets.

A senior GTS consultant then worked with MCBU staff to document data flows from field to desktop. This included the mapping of the overall MCBU information management architecture, key data flows and business processes, such as the one illustrated below.

In addition, to ensure the ongoing governance of data and information within the business unit, a Data Management Steering Team was implemented, with participation
of both asset team and asset support groups. Reference available upon request

Consultancy and data management project for Total ABK, Abu Dhabi

GTS conducted an initial audit on of the well data, its structure, location, provenance, history and validity and put forward a project proposal to find the original data, clean and validate it and deposit it within a modern well data management system. GTS was awarded the data management project.

GTS then ran the cleanup project, designed the final data infrastructure and liased with all parties to ensure the success of the project. A significant task was the management of a disparate group of staff, from a number of private companies, all working on different aspects of the project and commercially independent of GTS.

Evaluation of data and information - Cairn Energy, Chennai, India

GTS conducted a study of applications, geotechnical data and information used within CEIL. Key users were interviewed and existing work processes and data flows were mapped. The deliverable was a report to the client detailing the current situation and providing a series of recommendations to improve and standardise processes, improve data management procedures, reduce storage space by eliminating unnecessary data and increasing user trust in existing data stores.

Data management consultancy and clean-up for Kufpec, Kuwait

GTS conducted an initial audit of E&P application and data usage. The result was a report detailing the findings and a series of recommendations to improve the
effectiveness of the E&P group, reduce duplication and increase the level of trust in the data.

GTS then worked with Kufpec staff to rationalise applications, cleanup data and introduce standard processes for the handling of digital and physical data throughout the organisation.

Regional data reconciliation for Super-Major London and Aberdeen

GTS supplied several Data Management Specialists to develop and implement the cleanup of Well, Log and Curve data as part of a regional data cleanup project. The
objectives for the project were to improve data access for the geoscientists in Exploration, Development and Production thereby allowing them to work more
effectively. GTS was required to:

  • Define the high level strategy of the project
  • Review the existing data types; prioritise the data types by area.
  • Determine the requirements for data type cleanup and time forward procedures
  • Implement both data reconciliation of each data type and time forward procedures to cleanup the data

GTS Geotech remained on-site during the cleanup phase, both co-ordinating and performing the cleanup together with refining the time forward procedures for loading
new data. GTS Geotech represents the Log-Curve specialist on several committees at office, regional and corporate levels advising on techniques, procedures and constraints for the data cleanup.

Well data clean up for Super Major in Aberdeen and Lowestoft

years.

In all GTS provided six data specialist to work with the client’s IM team to develop workflows and methodologies and clean-up 10 separate well data types. Over 2000 wells were “QIP-ed” in a period of 18 months. The end of project report compiled by GTS was distributed throughout the client’s offices worldwide as an example of a successful QIP to be used as a basis for further projects.

Livelink business and systems analysis

GTS also won a contract to provide Livelink business and systems consultancy for a Document Management Conversion project at a Canadian oil company based in the UK. The client wanted to migrate a large amount of technical documentation to Livelink that was stored in a number of applications inherited after a large North Sea asset sale.

The GTS Livelink Business Consultant was responsible for conducting detailed requirements gathering & business/technical analysis on the data to be migrated and designed a solution to migrate the data from the application Enigma (Document & Workflow).

The solution included developing detailed taxonomy and mapping of the inherited Enigma designs to new Livelink-based designs. The Business Consultant also developed functional design for the Livelink conversion project and oversaw the conversion of data from Enigma to Livelink.
